WHY HIGHLAND PONIES?

For years I had mucked about with horses of different breeds but had always dreamed of getting into a breed that was rarer and held an ancient history, a breed that most people would not have heard about in Australia. I was also in a new position of being a mother and having to think of finding a breed of horse or pony that I would trust around my children, the horses we had at the time just weren’t suited to a young family. So I decided it was the perfect time to go after that dream and thus the research began!

I needed a breed that could easily carry an adult but be quiet and gentle enough for my children to be around and later go on to after their current ponies. I also needed a breed that would be capable of competing in the English disciplines and that had a natural jumping ability but also one that would make an ideal trail or pack horse for when we headed into the high country. Plus as we were living high in steep country at the time, I required a seriously surefooted breed that would not mind the occasional snow fall! I finally narrowed it down to about five breeds but in the end, the highland pony won for two main reasons. Number 1 – I really liked the look and build of the highland pony. Even though they are small in actual height, when you are around them, you feel like your in the presence of a big, strong, noble horse from a time long past. And number 2 – They are Scottish! For as long as I can remember I have felt a strong pull to all things Scottish, so I knew it was meant to be.

OUR NEW LOCATION

As of late September 2016, we are now situated at Yinnar South in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria. Our new property doesn’t have the dramatic scenery, snowfall or size of our Jumbuk property but it is very productive land with a nice view of gentle, rolling hills.
