The 80’s was the first decade to see a significant increase in the number of purebred Highland Pony foals born, with 25 in total recorded along with an additional 5 Australian Highland Ponies foals and 17 part breds to be born on Australian soils.

The early imported mare Penny Farthing produce two foals; a part bred colt, Barrymoor Florian, by Barrymoor Viking in 1981 and the purebred filly, Barrymoor Penny, sired by Barrymoor Grand Final, in 1983. These two foals would be the last recorded offspring out of Penny Farthing.

The imported Highland Ponies of the late 70’s, together with the offspring of the two earlier 60’s imported ponies, would now start to make a huge impact on the Highland Pony population in Australia

Trooper McPherson of Croila went on to sire 11 purebred foals during the 80’s, 6 being fillies and 5 colts, from which 3 notable stallions emerged.

Taranganba Macadam, out of Gipsy Melody of Turin Hill, also in 1981

and Barrymoor Jagirdar, also out of Gipsy Melody of Turin Hill, in 1986.

The two 1981 colts, would go on to sire some purebred offspring of their own in the 80’s also;

Taranganba Macadam only sired the one purebred gelding, Taranganba Dougal, in 1985 but Barrymoor Banner sired 6 foals in the 80’s and all were fillies for the Broomfield stud.

Barrymoor Grand Final, with the exception of Barrymoor Penny, went on to sire another 6 purebred foals, 3 fillies and 3 colts, with one being kept entire and would become a notable sire in his own right, Barrymoor Dorian, in 1985, out of Taraganba Donia.

In 1980 and 81 Barrymoor Grand Final sired an additional 3 fillies, that went into the Australian Highland Pony breed up program and 9 part bred foals which all were colts but 1.

Trooper McPherson of Croila also sired an additional filly, Taranganba Sarah, that enter into the Australian Highland Pony breed up program as well as a part bred filly to a TB mare.

There was one additional filly born, Haven Gabby, who was out of Taranganba Donia by the Haflinger stallion, Admiral, that also entered into the Australian Breed up program in the late 80’s.

The early 80’s also seen the merging of the Highland Pony Society of Australia and the Australian Stud Book.

By 1984 the Australian Highland Pony breed up program, together with the new appendix section, was running under the APSB together with the already implemented Highland Pony purebred section within the APSB. The HPSA would stay in operation, taking pony registrations though during the 80’s and into the 90’s until the APSB later opens up their part bred registry.

In 1982 Mr Alan Young, of the Whinmere Stud and one of the foundation breeders for the Highland Pony and Australian Highland Pony breed up program, sadly passed away.

The 80’s did see a few new breeders come on the Highland Pony breeding seen, namely; Broomfield and Glentartan.
